Don’t miss a Jacana Media Conversation on Gender-Based Violence and the Law

Jacana Media invite you to a conversation titled Gender-Based Violence and the Law.

As more survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) name and shame their abusers publicly, especially on social media platforms, for fear of them getting away with violent crimes such as assault, rape and even murder, these survivors also find themselves fighting a criminal justice system that seems ill-equipped to deal with the GBV plague that has engulfed South Africa.

Dr Sithembile Mbete will moderate a discussion between Vanessa Govender, a survivor and author of Beaten But Not Broken; Lerato Moloi, a survivor, model and activist; and lawyer Zanele Mbuyisa about the legal aspects that surface when survivors name and lay charges against perpetrators, often long after the abuse had taken place.

Is there recourse for those like Vanessa and Lerato in a system that often victimises survivors who may or may not have the physical evidence of their abuse documented?

About the book

In Beaten But Not Broken, Vanessa Govender, a celebrated former broadcast journalist, does the unthinkable in breaking the ranks of her close-knit conservative Indian community and speaks out about her five-year-long hell in an abusive relationship. Govender tells a graphic story of abuse, living with the pain, and ultimately how she fought her way out to find purpose and love. This is a story of possibilities and hope; it is a story of a survivor.
