Revealed! The Instagram-inspired design of Khaya Dlanga’s new book, These Things Really Do Happen to Me
More about the book!
The cover has been revealed for Khaya Dlanga’s new book, These Things Really Do Happen to Me.
What happens when you parallel park in Parkhurst? How about falling asleep next to President Thabo Mbeki or those awkward encounters with exes?
Well, these things do happen to Khaya Dlanga!
He’ll share these stories and more in his new book, coming this September from Pan Macmillan.
The book’s cover is inspired by Dlanga’s lively Instagram presence, with a ‘like’ from his mom and a cover shout, in the form of a comment, from Trevor Noah, who says:
‘Imagine the most fascinating stories your best friend ever told you. This is a book full of them!’
Dlanga has established himself as one of the most influential individuals in South African media, particularly social media, a platform he uses to promote discussion on topics that range from the frivolous to the profound. He is the author of In My Arrogant Opinion, published in 2012 as part of Picador Africa’s The Youngsters series, and To Quote Myself, published in 2015.
Dlanga shared some details about how the cover for his new book was developed on his Instagram account:
The cover of my new book, These Things Really do Happen to Me. It will be in stores in September. Thanks to @donovangoliath for designing the cover. Photo is by @saki_zam And thanks to @trevornoah for the shout quote 🕺🏾 (No, this is not a screenshot of an Instagram post). Donovan's idea was simple: you always tell stories on Instagram, so he designed a cover to tell that story. Then I decided to buck the tradition of having the shout quote at the back because the design allowed for us to do so. That's why Trevor's quote is like a comment right on the front cover. Book three, but my publisher says it's my forth book because the abridged version of To Quote Myself counts as its own book apparently.
