Profiting from Misery: Don’t miss a Jacana Conversation in partnership with Open Secrets
More about the book!
Open Secrets investigates the corporations and politicians who make money from corrupt arms deals and war crimes and how we can hold them to account.
Join a team of Open Secrets investigators as we delve into the shadowy world of South African arms deals and the people and corporations who profit from them.
In this Don’t Shut Up Jacana Conversation, Hennie van Vuuren, Director of Open Secrets, will be in conversation with Zen Mathe and Michael Marchant, Open Secrets researchers.
Van Vuuren is the author of Apartheid Guns and Money: A Tale of Profit, a meticulously researched book that lifts the lid on some of the darkest secrets of apartheid’s economic crimes.
This month Open Secrets launched a major new investigative report detailing how South African-manufactured bombs may be used to target civilians in Yemen; and they have proposals on how we can stop our complicity.
These war crimes are not an anomaly. As Open Secrets research shows, arms deals and economic crime were central to the functioning of the apartheid regime. This impunity explains the corrupt arms deals of the democratic era and the Mbeki administration as well as Jacob Zuma’s state capture project. However, there are now green shoots which suggest that accountability is possible. Will truth and justice trump power and profit?
