Writing tips from John Grisham
 More about the book!

Bestselling author John Grisham’s 30th novel, Camino Island, is out now from Jonathan Ball.

Grisham has sold more than 300 million copies of his books and has had 29 consecutive No. 1 books on the New York Times fiction bestsellers list.

In an interview with CBS, Grisham revealed some writing tips, saying writing by ‘following your characters’ is ‘total BS’.

Here are John Grisham’s writing tips, summarised:

  • You have to plot and outline your story carefully before you write the first word, especially if you’re writing a mystery or a thriller
  • Write a page every day, at the same place and the same time
  • Don’t write the first scene until you know the last
  • Don’t write a prologue
  • There are three types of words: words we all know, words we should know and words nobody knows. Don’t use third category.
