 More about the book!

Take a look behind the scenes at the story and legacy of the new movie Poppie Nongena.

Poppie Nongena is based on the celebrated novel The Long Journey of Poppie Nongena by Elsa Joubert, and will be in cinemas on 31 January 2020.

It is the moving true life story of an ordinary woman in extraordinary circumstances. Domestic worker and resilient Afrikaans-speaking isiXhosa mother Poppie Nongena desperately tries to keep her family together by navigating the day-to-day struggle against inhumane government pass laws in 1970s South Africa.

The film is directed by Christiaan Olwagen and stars Clementine Mosimane, Nomsa Nene, Anna-Mart van der Merwe and Chris Gxalaba.

The drama had its premiere at the Silwerskerm Festival in August, where it went on to win 12 awards including Best Feature Film, Best Script, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Ensemble Cast.
