Mphuthumi Ntabeni explains how his debut novel The Broken River Tent was inspired by his need to understand Xhosa history from the perspective of the dispossessed.
Ntabeni was a guest on the Exclusive Books video series Africa’s Lit.
The Broken River Tent is set in the time of Maqoma, the Xhosa chief at the forefront of fighting British colonialism in the Eastern Cape in the 19th century.
It is an entrancing novel that marries imagination with history, out now from BlackBird Books.
