[Video] ‘Fiction is really powerful’ – Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah does a deep dive into the writing of his hit novel Chain-Gang All-Stars
More about the book!
Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah goes in-depth into the writing of his debut novel Chain-Gang All-Stars – one of the books of the year!
Chain-Gang All-Stars is the story of two top women gladiators fighting for their freedom within a depraved private prison system not so far-removed from America’s own. In packed arenas, watched by millions of live-stream viewers, prisoners compete for the ultimate prize: their freedom.
Adjei-Brenyah is the author of the short story collection Friday Black, a National Book Foundation’s ‘5 Under 35’ honoree, a winner of the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award and the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing.
‘I think part of my purpose as a writer is to help make compassion the standard,’ Adjei-Brenyah says.
‘I hope I can be a small drop in that bucket that’s pushing us towards rethinking our communities, societies, civilisation at large, and try to make love and compassion the standard. I think that fiction is very good at doing that […] For me, fiction is really powerful for that reason.’
