Nnedi Okorafor chats about her new comic book – the first Nigerian superhero to be published by Marvel

Marvel comics will soon publish their first comic with a Nigerian superhero: Blessing In Disguise by Nnedi Okorafor.

The story is set in Lagos. Okorafor chatted to the BBC about the concept behind the main character she’s created – Ngozi.

‘I tend to write a very detailed script, but even before that I had asked the artist to make Ngozi in the likes of one of the Chibok girls, the missing girls from Boko Haram, and asked her to draw Ngozi in her likeness.’

Okorafor also spoke about the advantages of setting of setting her story in Lagos.

‘The advantage of setting a comic book superhero story in Lagos is that Lagos is awesome,’ she says. ‘Lagos is full of life and vibrancy and action and adventure and story.

‘If you set this type of narrative in Lagos, it practically writes itself.’
