Ngamlana says the foundation for the novel was a destructive relationship she herself went through.

‘At the centre of the novel are two lovers who are trying to make their relationship work,’ she says, ‘but it’s very volatile and toxic, and it’s abusive in every way.’

Another thing that inspired her, she says, was experimental fiction by authors such as Kathy Acker, who challenged the form and structure and language of the novel.
