Julia Martin explains why this launch is significant: ‘The Blackridge House began in conversations with my mother Elizabeth Martin, at the end of her life. She had forgotten many things, but what still gleamed bright was the memory of her beloved childhood home at Blackridge. The address was lost, but it became important to me to find it. The book is the story of that meandering quest.

‘To be launching it at Epworth is a particular joy that she would have appreciated keenly. During the 1960s and 70s Mrs Martin, as she was known, was one of the defining teachers at the junior school, where the experimental ethos of the time provided the perfect environment for her to live out her strongly-held conviction that, as she always said, “every child is creative”.

‘Having myself been one of exceptionally lucky young people who grew up in the rich educational ecosystem of Epworth during those years, it’s moving now to be returning to the place where I learnt to read and write. And to be in talking about the book with our fabulous matric English teacher, Mary Gardner! This is a very special delight.’
