Two significant books and a new edition of I Write What I Like commemorate the 40th anniversary of Steve Biko’s tragic death.

Working in conjunction with the Steve Biko Foundation, Picador Africa has released:

No Fears Expressed, a compilation of quotes from Steve Biko, drawn from his written and spoken words and covering a wide range of topics reflecting the philosophy of Black Consciousness as well as the ever-present challenges that confront South Africans.

The Testimony of Steve Biko, covering the testimony given by Steve Biko during the trial of nine black activists who, in 1976, were called to the dock for daring to aspire to a more just and humane society. Biko was called as a witness in their defence and the testimony that he provided provides vivid insight into his humanity, eloquence and intellectual brilliance.

Both books are edited by Millard W Arnold, who is presently a senior adviser to Bowmans, managing partner of Masakata Consulting and CEO of the South African Business Schools Association He was a journalist for the Washington Post and a senior fellow at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Pan Macmillan is also the publisher of I Write What I Like the iconic collection of Biko’s writing.

Released in 2017, this 40th anniversary edition includes a Foreword by Njabulo S Ndebele, as well as Biko’s first known published piece of writing. In addition, it features all the material of the original Picador Africa edition: a collection of Biko’s columns entitled I Write What I Like published in the journal of the South Africa Student Organisation under the pseudonym of ‘Frank Talk’; other journal articles, interviews and letters written by Steve Biko at the time; an Introduction by Nkosinathi Biko; a preface by Archbishop Desmond Tutu; and a moving memoir by Father Aelred Stubbs, which pays tribute to the courage and power of this young leader, who was to become one of Africa’s heroes.
