 More about the book!

SABC2 Morning Live interviewed Professor Peter Delius recently about his new book Rights to Land: A Guide to Tenure Upgrading and Restitution in South Africa.

The book, co-authored William Beinart and Michelle Hay, seeks to understand the issues around land rights and distribution of land in South Africa and proposes that new policies and processes should be developed and adopted.

So when went wrong with land restitution?

‘It’s shocking when you think about it,’ Delius says, ‘and it’s even worse when you think that many of the old people who came forward with land claims and lodged them by 1998, many of them have died and never seen any return on their claims or real recognition of the losses that they suffered.’

Delius says part of the problem is that land restitution was originally meant to be a simple and quick exercise, but became more large-scale and long-term than the systems in place could handle.
