The next District 9? Trailer released for Apocalypse Now Now – based on the novel by Charlie Human
Exciting news for South African fiction fans! Charlie Human’s dark Cape Town-based urban fantasy novel Apocalypse Now Now, published by Umuzi in 2013, has been adapted into a short film.
Snarky, monster-porn-dealing teen, Baxter Zevcenko, might be a serial killer. His girlfriend, Esme, is missing, and he’s the prime suspect. To clear his name, he’ll turn to Cape Town’s grizzliest, drunkest bounty hunter, Jackson ‘Jackie’ Ronin. Little does he know that Ronin is a supernatural bounty-hunter, and that he’s about to be dragged headlong into a deep, dark Cape Town underbelly full of monsters and myth, shadowy government forces, bloodthirsty crow-men and a conspiracy across time and space.
The film stars Garion Dowds as Baxter Zevcenko, Louw Venter as Jackie Ronin and Faniswa Yisa as The Vigilante. It was written by Sean Drummond and is directed by Michael Matthews.
The plan is to make a full feature film, and the seven minute short will double as a proof of concept to get that development off the ground.
The film will premiere on Short of the Week on 29 August.
Based off a celebrated book this South African proof-of-concept could be the next District 9. Full film August 29th! https://t.co/hDMn7DQXKm
