Cape Talk radio host and author Sara-Jayne King chatted to Polity recently about her new book Killing Karoline.

Born Karoline King in 1980 in Johannesburg, she is the result of an illegal affair between a white British woman and black South African man during apartheid. 

Her book reveals the shocking lie created to cover up the forbidden relationship.

When she was 21, King decided to contact her biological mother, purely out of ‘curiosity’.

King says she was not looking for a mother, but to find out where she came from. ‘I wanted to know things like, was my father musical? What did he sound like when he laughed?’ she says.

But her mother was not receptive at all.
