Kasrils says he and a few other people noticed some suspect behaviour in Jacob Zuma back when they were in uMkhonto weSizwe together.

‘The key concern [in my book] is that what I was noticing then is what in the country we’re seeing now with the rottenness in the state … the secretive way he’s dealt mortal blows to so many departments …

‘You see, the minor faultlines of a person before you have power, when they have power, if it’s a rotten person, then it’s magnified, it’s dangerous, it threatens the fabric of our society.’

Brown asks Kasrils: ‘Is Jacob Zuma a symptom of what is wrong with the ANC or is he the totality of the problem?’

‘He starts as a symptom. He’s got to the point where his power, where his patronage, where his network, has consumed the ANC like a cancer spreading through the body. We’ve seen this in government as well.’
