Internationally renowned South African author Karel Schoeman (77) died on Monday night in the Noorderbloem old age home in Bloemfontein, where he lived for the past ten years, reports News24.

Schoeman was the winner of a number of literary awards, and was shortlisted for the 2014 Alan Paton Award for his extraordinary work Portrait of a Slave Society: The Cape of Good Hope 1717 – 1795 (Protea Boekhuis).

He was also tipped as a possible winner of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature.
