International rugby referee Jonathan Kaplan chats about becoming a rookie solo dad and his new book, Winging It
More about the book!
Jonathan Kaplan chatted to Sara-Jayne King on 567 Cape Talk recently about his new book Winging It.
The celebrated international rugby referee has had his fair share of challenging moments on the field, but in 2016 he faced his biggest challenge yet: the birth of his son.
Kaplan’s son, Kaleb, was born by surrogate, and Winging It is the disarmingly frank and scrupulously honest account of how Kaplan navigates the choppy waters of solo parenthood.
At times poignant and tender, and at others downright funny, Winging It is a thoroughly contemporary take on what constitutes a family and how we dare to build one.
‘In my particular case, I worry about the female energy for Kaleb, but maybe I’m over-thinking it?’ he says. ‘Maybe just give him as much love as possible so that he’s able to live his best possible life.’
