Angela Makholwa chats to The Cheeky Natives at the launch of The Blessed Girl
More about the book!
Angela Makholwa’s new novel The Blessed Girl was launched at Exclusive Books Rosebank recently.
The Blessed Girl looks at the dynamics of the modern day phenomenon of blessers from the vantage point of a blessee herself.
Makholwa was chatting to Alma-Nalisha Cele of The Cheeky Natives.
If you missed this conversation, the book will be launched again, tomorrow (Tuesday, 21 October 2017) at The Book Lounge and on Thursday, 2 November 2017 at Skoobs Theatre of Books.

Angela describes Bontle Tau, the protagonist of #BlessedGirl as "the ultimate material girl" but adds that she's a denislist.

If you're in disbelief, get this – Bontle says she would rather be Marilyn Monroe than Albert Einstein 😂

What's interesting is Angela says when she started writing Bontle, she disliked her, but it was important to show her fully #BlessedGirl

"Bontle really represents the failings that we've had as a country" – @alma_nalisha of @CheekyNatives #TheBlessedGirl
— Literary Alliance (@LitAllianceSA) October 26, 2017
“When I started writing the character, I myself didn’t like her…” @AngelaMakholwa laughs, “it’s a slippery slope.” #TheBlessedGirl

“Read the book and tell us how you feel about the ending… please! I’m so angry with Angela!” – @CheekyNatives on finishing #TheBlessedGirl

“There are young women who went to university or just starting out their careers, living the blesser/ blessee lifestyle.” @AngelaMakholwa
— Pan Macmillan SA (@PanMacmillanSA) October 26, 2017
“As a black woman, Bontle represents our failings as a country. It speaks to the ideas of success that we have…” #TheBlessedGirl pic.twitter.com/WT5hcaADmq

“When you choose a certain path in life, no matter which path you choose, each has its own consequence.” @AngelaMakholwa #TheBlessedGirl
— Pan Macmillan SA (@PanMacmillanSA) October 26, 2017
#TheBlessedGirl tackles depression, Black female friendships, cosmetic surgery, the untalked about life of the blesser… it’s a must-read!
