‘A Pink Line has been drawn through society’ – Mark Gevisser introduces his new book, The Pink Line: Journeys Across the World’s Queer Frontiers
More about the book!
Mark Gevisser’s new book is an exploration of how the conversation around sexual orientation and gender identity has come to divide – and describe – the world in an entirely new way over the first two decades of this century.
In the video below, Gevisser unpacks the meaning behind the book’s title.
‘My book is called The Pink Line: Journeys Across the World’s Queer Frontiers, and it’s about an explosive global conversation that defines and describes the world in an entirely new way,’ he says.
‘While same-sex marriage and gender transition are now celebrated in some parts of the world as signs of progress, laws are being strengthened to criminalise them in others. Thus has a Pink Line been drawn between those places increasingly integrating queer people into their societies as full citizens and those finding new ways to shut them out.
‘But the Pink Line doesn’t only run between countries, it also runs through countries. It runs through TV studios and parliaments, through news rooms and courtrooms and living rooms, through families and communities, through bodies themselves.’
