Sol Plaatje EU Poetry Award & Anthology
The Jacana Literary Foundation (JLF) is pleased to announce that submissions for the tenth annual Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Award and Anthology are open. This award and anthology are made possible through ongoing support and partnership with the European Union.
Up to three poems in any of South Africa’s official languages can be submitted via the online entry form that will be put up on the Jacana website. Entrants are encouraged to submit poems written in their mother tongue. Entries will close at 5 pm on Friday, 29 January.
Prizes:
A shortlist of three poets will be selected by the judging panel.
Cash prizes are awarded to the shortlist:
- 1st place: R6000
- 2nd place: R4000
- 3rd place: R2000

2021 Dinaane Debut Fiction Award
If you are an aspiring author and want the chance to get published, then this is the opportunity you have been waiting for.
For the past 15 years, first as the European Union Literary Award and now as the Dinaane Debut Fiction Award, this platform has unearthed great new literary talent within South Africa and now within southern African countries. We welcome submissions that demonstrate innovative and unique writing. Submissions are open and will close on the 26 February 2021.
The shortlist will be announced in August 2021. The overall winner will receive R35 000 and will be published by Jacana Media.

Gerald Kraak Award and Anthology
Created in honour of the late activist Gerald Kraak’s extraordinary legacy of supporting human rights, this award advances his contribution to building a world that is safe and welcoming to all.
The unique award calls for multi-layered, brave and stirring African voices that represent a new wave of fresh storytelling, one that provokes thought on the topics of gender, social justice and sexuality.
Submissions are open all year round, and are open to the following genres:
- Fiction
- Non-fiction
- Poetry
- Photography
- Journalism / magazine reporting
- Scholarly articles in academic journals and book chapters / extracts
- Social media / blog writings and contributions
