Exclusive reveal: Siphiwo Mahala’s play The House of Truth out soon, with a foreword by Cyril Ramaphosa

Siphiwo Mahala’s hit play The House of Truth will be published in book form soon, with a foreword by Cyril Ramaphosa.

The play is based on the life of Can Themba, acclaimed journalist and author, most famously, of the award-winning short story ‘The Suit’.

Directed by Vanessa Cook and starring Sello Maake ka Ncube, The House of Truth premiered at the National Arts Festival in 2016,  receiving rave reviews, and had a sold-out season at The Market Theatre – where Deputy President Ramaphosa watched it – and Soweto Theatres this year.

From the play’s programme notes:

Laced with wit, humour and a deep sense of irony it reveals the circumstances that inspired some of Can Themba’s most intriguing works and covers some profound aspects of his life that are rarely written about.

The House of Truth was Themba’s way of cocking a snook at snobbery, officialdom and anything that smacked of bureaucracy. He hosted candid debates where anyone irrespective of race or social class was welcomed to participate in intellectual engagement.
