Hartley provides some insights into Ramaphosa’s upbringing and where his interest in politics came from.
‘What’s interesting about Cyril is that he knows how to play power well and how to keep his adversaries off-balance,’ Hartley says.
Hartley mentions Ramaphosa’s work as a negotiator for the National Union of Mineworkers and during the Constitutional negotiation process.
‘From time to time he would ice somebody out, just to put them in their place, keep them on their toes,’ he says.
