Bestselling Italian writer Elena Ferrante is to write her first ever regular newspaper column, in the Guardian.

Ferrante is the author of the highly acclaimed Neapolitan series, My Brilliant Friend, which was translated in 2012, The Story of a New Name (2013), Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay (2014) and The Story of the Lost Child (2015)

The column marks a public return to writing for Ferrante, after an investigative journalist controversially claimed to have revealed her true identity a year ago, causing her to take a break from writing. Ferrante says anonymity frees her from the ‘anxiety of notoriety’.

In a weekly column for the Guardian’s Weekend magazine, she will share her thoughts on childhood, ageing, gender and, in her debut article, first love.

Ferrante told The Guardian she was ‘attracted to the possibility of testing myself’ with a regular column, and called the experience ‘a bold, anxious exercise in writing’.
